Rub al Khali is the largest contiguous sand desert in the world which covers most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula, covering 250, 00 square miles, including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen and The United Arab Emirates, which is said to be one of the world's most beautiful photographic locations.
Interestingly, along many parts of the desert water can be found just three meters below ground level. Sand dunes and sheets of gravel and other natural elements cover most of the United Arab Emirates, which range from vast flat expanses to strikingmountain high mega-dunes that sit as prominent featureswithinits sweeping landscape, offering ideal photo opportunities. Surface depth can vary from 2,600ft high in the southwest, right down to around sea level in the northeast.
This terrain is covered with spectacular sand dunes with heights up to 820 feet, with gravel and gypsum plains scattered within them. The sand has a hint of reddish orange due to the element feldspar. In parts of the desert there are areas of raised hardened gypsum, calcium carbonate, marl and clay which exists due to the shallow lakes that existed thousands of years ago.
The lakes are thought to have formed due to past monsoon rains which probably lasted for a few years. However, lakes in the southwest of the Rub al Khali show evidence of lasting as long as 800 years due to increased runoff from the Tuwaig Escarpement. There is also evidence that indicates the lakes were once home to a range of flora, fauna, plants and algae. Fossil remains suggest the presence of many varieties of animal species such as hippopotamus, water buffalo and long-horned cattle, which offers great photo subjects, as well as the many current well-adapted species that live among the dunes.
